Hey, I was wondering if anybody had applied to Cardiff?
Just found out I have an interview in Feb/March. Very happy as this is the only course I would get funding for because I'm a Welsh resident. Very nervous for the interview now!!
I've also got an interview in Cardiff in Feb/March, apparently you're required to do a literature review as part of the interview, extremely nervous about it as that's the uni I really wanna get into..don't know much about funding........are you gonna live at home or move to cardiff?
Im in the same position with Cardiff. I was going to interview the woman that emailed for an exact date because it was about 2 months ago since I heard from her.
Just really worrying about experience and things, but have a few interviews for universities in the north west so hopefully they'll be able to give me some preparation for the cardiff interview.
P2321 have you got your interview pack yet, I haven't got mine yet. V.nervous though. Does anyone know anything about the reflective part thingy???
I havent had anything!only an email from susan hayes is it? saying i have an interview in february or march, im hoping the interview pack will tell us all that we need.
What sort of prep are you doing for the interview?
I dont tend to get nervous but im worried that my experience will let me down.
Paula
I'm trying to do some research about the Welsh context because it seems like they put a whole load of emphasis on it, Don't worry too much about your experience coz I reckon the important thing is to link it into your answer..I'm more concerned about the critical/reflective thing, can I do a book? Have u got other interviews as well Paula?
Brian
Well I'm studying at Cardiff University at the moment, but I'm from North East Wales so I've also applied to Chester uni aswell as I could live at home if I studied there. But definitely feeling the pressure for the Cardiff interview as that's where I want to go!!
My personal tutor at uni is a Social Work lecturer and she told me that only about 40% of applicants get asked for an interview (so we've done well there so far :) !!)
So then they interview just over 200 people for about 40 places... :-/
But it could be even more competition this year as this will be the last year that funding will be provided.
yay!! But i guess the competition is fierce everywhere anyway. I really wanna get into Cardiff as well as I'm from Bristol and moving to Cardiff won't be too far away for me..what kind of preparation work have u done so far??
I've got 3 more interviews next week and they've all asked different thing.
But preparation wise for the others (and hopefully by the time I get to Cardiff I will be well practised) I have read the Neil Thompson understand social work-preparing for practice. Ive also been reading the guardian (Manchester met have specifically asked for this or the independent) so I have an understanding of social issues.
Im unsure what to do regarding policies and things but I work for MENCAP Cymru at the minute so already know the care council for wales legislation roughly but I dont know many acts or anything.
I want so much to get into cardiff but you never know exactly what they look for!
Have either of you done much prep? Also has anyone heard exact dates for interviews?
wow, it seems like you've done like tons of preparation work behind you. I have read about the 10 year social care strategy by WAG (dunno if that's of any use or not), I reckon they may not ask too much stuff about legislation, policy but then as you said, you'll never know. I have that Thompson book as well, but thanks for the guardian, haven't really thought about that..
Rang Susan Hayes this morning and she said they are still waiting for the admission tutor or someone like that to get back to them so they won't send the interview pack 'til next week or the week after. I don't wanna leave the whole preparation thing 'til the last minute and they are really good at playing this waiting game and its not even at the interview stage yet!!!!
Does anybody know anything about the literature review thing? Good luck with your other interviews..
Hi! Ive applied for Cardiff, got an email only this morning notifying me I have an interview. I dont have a date yet though, just says feb/march time!! I'm a Welsh student too, so really relying on this one... eek!
Where do you live in Wales? Im from Wrexham! I have also applied for Chester, but really hoping to get in to Cardiff where I did my degree!Im so worried about where I would live etc, what will everyone else be doing?
I've been re-reading through some old threads on the internet and there are a few that have said that the Cardiff interview focus on the code of practice and relating your experience to that.
I also had an interview at LJMU yesterday (which Im using as a practice interview as there is no way i can afford it) but they only asked two questions in the one to one interview:
-What are the qualities (good and bad) that you will bring to Social Work?
-Name a group in society that are discriminated against, how and why?
The one thing that I did get from this interview was that they're really focussed on anti-discrimination as it was mentioned constantly throughout the day.
Ive personally got a really bad feeling about Cardiff but fingers crossed, if not im secretly hoping that the whispers ive been hearing about a masters in social work in bangor are true.
Hi, I have also applied to do my masters in Cardiff. I applied within the time frame but very much towards the end. I was wondering how long it took for you all to hear if you had an interview or not? Very nervous and just want to know if I have made the next stage or not :-s Well done to you all though and good luck.....
hi, has anyone got the interview pack yet? It seems like there will be a copy of the code of practice attached in it, also can we bring the code of practice in the interview??? soooooo nervous now..
I'm expecting my pack any day now, I received an email last week explaining that I would hear shortly of the date of my interview, Feb/March time. I have a interview in Salford on the 31st, Cardiff is my top choice though.Anyone else Welsh? I found out that you only receive funding from the Welsh body if you're Welsh and go to a Welsh university.. Cardiff is currently the only Welsh university who offer the MA Social Work!Anyone had their packs/dates yet?
Congratulations to all that have interviews so far... to those that haven't heard yet-don't worry as heard they were still interviewing in March last year.
You will have codes of practice sent with your interview pack, and you'll have to refer these to your previous experience but you can take notes into the interview if needed (i did!!!). the critical review was on a journal article of own choice.
good luck, staff that interview are great and will make you feel at ease!!!
HI rosie, thanks for the info, much appreciated! Just wondering do we have to relate our answers to the welsh context coz I've read the 10 year strategy by the WAG and a bit of other bits and bobs really..and do we have to apply the code of practice to every single question as well?
also, for the critical review, do we have to do a journal article or can we do a chapter in a thompson book or whatever?
sorry to bombard you with loads of questions, but i am dying for a place in cardiff so anything helps!!!
I have interview :)
I am woundering how much funding will i get is it possible to lives on the nhs busery and I am english student.
Thanks
I know that you can't claim from the care council for Wales, you will have to check the eligibility and all that. I was concerned that as a welsh student I wouldn't receive funding if I went to an English university such as Salford. I emailed the NHS bursary people and they didn't really answer my question!
But what about if you move to Wales? Does it make you eligible? Coz I went to Bristol University of West of England and I'm planning to move to Cardiff if i got a place...
Hi,
I believe theres no fundning for people in england coming to wales and vice versa. I have rang both nhs and care council and they both say the same thing. To claim the bursary I have been told that you can't just move for the sake of your course and it is something like have been resident in the country for 3 years ( i have read the time somewhere else and didn't get told by them). They're quite strict on the residency criteria.
Hi all I received a email about two weeks ago telling me I had been selected for interview in Feb/ march and that I would receive a letter soon. I still haven’t received a letter... just wondering if anyone else has got their interview letter yet?
Cat
Hi, I did finally here that i got an interview. I do know Cardiff apparently like to play the waiting game and last year potential students were still getting invites to come for an interview right up up until the first week of march. You could always ring and ask? I did ring last week to find out when my interview was and Susan Hayes was really helpful. Good luck, I hope you get an interview.
lu
Hi its funny you say that because I rang the nhs bursary twice, and they were certain as an English student I would get funding to study in Wales. It was just the other way round, Welsh students studying in England would not get funding.
so lu, are you suggesting if someone like me (from bristol) got a place in cardiff and move there for the course I'd still get the funding?
i still haven't got the letter yet, has anybody got one yet?
no not yet, i rang susan hayes on friday and she said letters had not been sent out yet but were hoping to go out monday ( as in yesterday) or if not early this week. so we should get one any day.
Hi. That is what the nhs bursary told me. As im also coming from bath I wanted to make sure I would get funding. However it does seem people are getting told different things. So I will ring again and check. Also I haven't got a letter but I did ring Cardiff uni and they were able to tell me the date of my interview.
When I rang NHS they told me as I'm welsh I would get no funding in England, if you look on the bursary page for the English, the eligibility explains you must be English attending an english university. Similarly, if you go to the care council for Wales (which is where welsh students apply for a bursary) their eligibility explains you must be welsh applying to a welsh university to receive. It's so unfair, thought the NHS would be a bit better :( if Cardiff doesn't accept me I'm going to have to get a personal development loan from the bank!
Right I have just spoke to a really nice guy from the social work bursary...really helpful this is what he said............As an English resident WE ARE entitled to have the following to study for our masters in any UK university
basic award,
means tested
tuition fees still confirming
The confusion is that people applying for the NHS bursaries not the social work NHS bursaries (they have there own set of eligibility) can only get funding to study in an English university if the original reside in England. Unfortunately this isn't the same for welsh students wanting to study else where they only get funding if they study in Wales regardless of it being an NHS or social work bursary. Which seems unfair too me any ways I hope this clears up any confusion.
sorry wasn't meant to put confirming after tuition fees, as we are entitled to help towards them aswell.
You guys are lucky! On the plus side just rang the university and got my interview date :)
Ahhhh such a weight off the mind knowing when it is. I have mine in March so hopefully enough time to prepare, so nervous. I have Bournemouth in a week so hopefully it will give me an idea of what to expect, as Cardiff is also my first choice. Did they happen to say when they would be sending the interview packs out?
She told me they were pretty much ready to be sent out! So very soon. Excited, I did my degree in Cardiff so I will stay with some friends for the weekend too :)
Anyone applied for postgrad in Sussex or brighton
I received my interview pack today and my interview is on Tuesday! 5 days prep time!! I suggest you all crack on with it even if you haven't received yours yet so you don't get caught short like I have!
I will admit i spoke to an absolute tool when i spoke to a man from the nhs bursary bit....he continued to tell me stupid information and kept referring to me as living outside of the uk when I am welsh. It is such a stupid system, and grossly unfair that with welsh people only having one option that other nationalities are eligible for funding for it.
On a brighter note I did get into JMU (although I cant afford it) so I am hoping that if they liked me Cardiff will :D
Oh no, stressful! Good luck with it, mine isn't until end of March! Let us know how you get on sweet!
