Hiya...is anybody starting the Open University K101 course this October.  Have you recieved your package yet?  Wow, so much to get through.!!!  I have not been in education for over 15yrs and it is all quite daunting.  Would be good to chat to others starting this course and tackling the 1st TMA (tutor marked assigment).  Any tips and advice would be welcomed :-)

hello,

I completed the K100 course last october, which is now the K101.  It a V good course if you want to start on a more proffessional direction for your career.  I am just finishing my ED209 childhood development course and have also now started full time uni doing my social work degree.  Without K100 I would not have been accepted on the course, it is agreat background for starting in social work, covers alot on social policy and accountability.

For your TMA's i would highly recommend reading fully the section in you good study guide that covers this, it section 10 i think, long and wordy but vey usefull if you havene't ever written and academic essay before.  i think if its anything like the strcuture of the course i did you fiast essay may be around informal carers??? or bowlby and maternal deprivation.  Just keep in factual, to the point and answer the question.  never be afraid to ask questions of the research, be critical of it but in a clear objective way, with evidence for your critic as well. one thing i have learnt, say nothing unless you can back it up with evidence!!!!

hope you get on well

Hey cappachino!!

I actually completed the k101 this year, and it gave me the qualification I needed to get on to the social work degree I have just started!

I thoroughly enjoyed the k101 course, I found it interesting, thought-provoking and insightful - you really will enjoy it!! I would definately recommend making use of the online forums where you can chat and find support with many other people in the same boat as you!! Your personal tutor will also offer you plenty of support, and don't be afraid to approach them with any questions or queries - they are more than happy to help!

The workload is very big, but just try as hard as you can to stick to the study calender and you'll be fine! They even give you catch up weeks to get back on your feet!

The tma's do seem very daunting but after the first couple you really do get the hang of it! After they have been marked and returned you get detailed feedback, and I would definately recommend making a point of reading it all through and taking note of what you can do next time to improve!!

For the exam, revise and prepare in advance and you will pass with flying colours!! Good luck and if you need any help at all you can always private message me!! Laura

I am Richard Chidiebere, just the K101 course, I am not really scared because It was a calculated attempt by myself to the cause, so there is no cause to be scared, moreover in the present botton age without good education you just find your self at the bottom line.  My advice is that if we have decided to be educated, let us have hope on ourselves, put every effort and soon it will pay off.

I did this course a few years ago and really enjoyed it.  I've since done a few others and got Dip health & social care which has let my apply for BA in Social work at Uni (eeekk) The only advice I can give is to try and keep up with the reading (even if it means in bed at night) and play the CDs in the car, etc - it really filters through!! I'm sure when you get into it you will get the bug and keep going with education. Good luck

Hi Margy

You realy impressive, age is only a number dont be discouraged, when I was in college last year doing Mathematics and Human Health and Physiology I told a Japaneese guy 72 years had graduated as a doctor and was on the back and could foresee his salary in one year to by a luxiourous house. Its about learning and retaining what you've learnt. I am 55 but that gives me steam to learn, play football, run, swim, read and work.

All the best
