    Hospital Social Work

I am just finishing my MSc in Social Work and would really like to work in a hospital setting in inner London. Does anyone know the best way I go about achieving this? Should I just approach the hospital team or do I need to go through the Local Authority? Any advice would be great.

Hi congratulations on finishing your course!!

This is probably not much help but in my area (west yorkshire) hospital social work is advertised like other vacancies on the Local authorities vacancy pages.

It is always good to approach the hospital team to see what vacancies there are and maybe ask about shadowing? It is good for professional development and will give you an insight in to the role. You could always contact an agency to see if they have any hospital based social work roles? again a good way to get your foot in the door if there aren't any permanent vacancies.

Yes, as tykechick said, local authorities tend to put Social Workers into hospitals so it would be the local authority that would advertise (except in perhaps, some specific examples like Palliative Care/Renal Care, maybe).

Actually as there aren't many hospitals inner London and it's pretty much my 'patch' in that I've been in and out of most of them (for work, I hasten to add) I can say that that is the case!
