What would you do with billions of pounds?

Bill Gates is packing in his day job to do good works

While he is only the third richest man in the world (Warren Buffett is number one and a Mexican media mogul number two) he still has billions in the bank and in the Bill and Melinda Gate Foundation.

So if you had billions of pounds what would you spend it on ?

I'd do a degree in history and a degree in archeology and then I'd buy a metal detector - oh yes - and a big house and a yatch. Actually forget the yacht - I hate sailing.

And I'd probably give a sizeable chunk to the YMCA as well because they picked me up when I was on the streets and gave me a start in life.

I'd give millions to charity (too many to list but lots working asylum seekers, HIV, LGBT communities and many more in the UK and overseas...), consider buying Community Care from its publishers (LOL!), give money to friends and family, buy more shoes, a country pad.... and a 'green' car. The list is endless really and a great question Keefer.

     What would you do?

aaahhhh dreams! i would also give some to different charities. i would like to do what they did on some of the programmes of The Secret millionaire in which the millionaires connected with some real small grass root charities which do stirling work and struggle for funding. i would also take my 15 year old son around the world as it has always been my dream to do it with him since he was swimming around inside me. i would also by a historic pad in the country with acres of well kept gardens with mazes and herbs and vegetables and a swimming pool. good job its a billion not a million!

Buy a house with a garden - probably close to where I live now because I like it here, I just miss having any outdoor space and I'd pay off mortgages of close family members and give them enough to go on holidays etc etc.

A big holiday to South America - always wanted to go to Macchu Picchu and Patagonia.. oh and see the penguins.

Work part-time (I don't honestly think I could give up work altogether but a three day week would be quite nice).

When I worked in learning disabilities, a man, instead of donating money to the charity I worked for, donated 100 overseas holidays in the sun including carers (I was one of the carers that went.. !), All expenses paid for the service users. I thought then and think now, it was the most amazing thing as a lot of the people we took had never been on holiday overseas and it was in a luxury hotel with a pool and fine dining. I felt that although the charity would have preferred the cash, the joy that it brought to the people I worked with was just incredible.

I always thought if I ever had the money, that's the kind of thing I'd like to do.

I think the first thing I did apart from the usual is to pay off a certain leader (so called) in Africa and free his people from what they are going through. The reason for this is because it appears the rest of the world are standing by and allowing this person to allegedly hurt, bully and kill innocent people.

Sorry to make it a bit serious when it is a bit of dreaming and fun but when you consider how much we put into our forces in other countries to protect the people but do nothing about africa I get really upset.

I would seriously reconsider my life if money would no longer be a problem. First thing would be very sensible - consult a financial advisor! Then I would decide where to live - don't get me wrong I love England for many reasons, not least family and friends, but I can't cope with our relentless poor summers. So to be in a position where you could live somewhere in the Mediterranean for the summer and wake up to blue skies for almost all of May-October would be my dream. Then I'd be happy to spend the winters here.

Then they'd be visiting all the places in the world on my must-see list. I'd stop full-time work, but would want to continue working in some form as I like being part of a team. I would explore learning new skills. I'd love to work in court in some way as I find legal life fascinating, maybe witness or victim support. Plenty of money to charities, family and friends.

I'd love the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona to be finished in my lifetime, so if it was a question of money I would pay for that!

In no particular order:- stop working full time, buy a sports car, learn how to drive again (it's been 6 years!), make my parents and those close to me very comfortable financially, go to the Maldives, buy a lovely big mansion which needed work so I could really create somewhere with my mark on it, get my cats diamond collars and lots of their favourites - prawns, parma ham and smoked salmon pate, get a personal trainer because it would be too tempting for a foodie like me not to eat out in lots of fantastic restaurants and become the size of aforementioned mansion, buy my mum and dad a yacht so they could sail round the world in their retirement, donate sizeable amounts to my chosen charities including Cancer Research, do one of those secret millionaire shows as I think they are brilliant and really ground rich people but I wouldn't give a one off sum, I would give them X amount per year for the next 5 years and would want to be involved with their work and be hands on if possible, buy a property in Zante or Rhodes and spend my days drinking ouzo, eating olives and writing a steamy novel and then set up a cat sanctuary in the UK to care for cats who are homeless or need caring for. Would I have any money left?
