Re: Introductions - introduce yourself here!

Some people may recognise who I really am! I used to be very active within BASW but left when I believed that it was becoming less in touch with 'ordinary' members and that certain of the 'inner circle' were actively seeking to disenfranchise 'grassroots' members. I still, however, take a great interest in BASW and regret that it still only has something like a 10,000 membership.

I have been in social work for over 35 years and qualified in 1978 at Bristol University. I very much value the 'generic' training and practice that I have experienced and regret the more narrow and 'specialised' route that the profession has gone down with, in most local authorities, a complete division between adults and childrens services. It is not easy to take a truly holistic view when not trained and experienced in generic social work.

I have become increasingly worried at the direction of social work and feel that Universities etc. are not teaching students about the origins of the profession. It is not about local government predominantly! Also the move towards social workers becoming more Case Managers than Case Workers is also worrying. The casework and inter-personal skills originally so highly valued seem to be much reduced.

Senior management also seems to be receiving a very poor 'Press' of late with too many allegations of bullying and 'macho' management. I can not help but think that the Performance Indicators / Target-driven approach is particularly unhelpful and undermining very often of what ought to constitute effectice social care.

I have been an agency worker for the past 8 years mainly in a management capacity but relationships with too many more senior managers have become fraught and I have become really worried as to where some of their main priorities really lie - more controlling budgets, it seems, and defending the indefensible! I really worry about services to children and young people with disabilities.

So, that's a bit about me!

     Hi Lolita

Thanks for your comments - glad you like CareSpace! I think social work in schools is really important but it seems a shame that you're not allowed to get more involved. Has the school had social workers attached before?

Not fully QSW, just students the year before us.

Going through the evidence i need to provide for my assessor, i think i will meet my key roles, but the anxiety of successfully completing the placement still hangs over me!

    Hi Lolita

My mum is a teacher in a primary school and is always saying how her job is so much more "social worky" these days as in she has to get involved in so many child protection issues. She is an incredibly good teacher and loves the teaching part but feels she didn't train as a social worker and is more suited to the class room teaching. I'm sure her school would love a student social worker wanting to get involved and helping out. It's vital student social workers get the most out of their placements.

I totally agree...theres definately a place for us, but hopefully as they get used to having us schools who havent already got social workers will see the benefits and help to forge and maintain links with outside agencies to do more preventative work...rather than waiting for things to happen.

Thank you for the encouragement. As CareSpace is quite knew to me, I hope to 'grow' with everyone else using it. By this I mean that material may not always be posted to the particular forum as it should be. But like they do in supermarkets, changing the location of items makes the shopper go around the isles a bit more. The rationale is that the shopper may find something else, or maybe even new.

I posted an issue on PRTL last night and I am hoping to get some response. I am really excited about being able to share experience with others.

    Hi

I have been a qualified Social Worker since 2003. I have worked within a Local Authority team since then , working in a Child Protection area Team in Newcastle upon Tyne. No doubt if there are any Social Workers from Newcastle who join they may recognise my name. I joined the forums last week and find that it is a real benefit for all us professionals to be able to share experiences and advice with other hard working people.Smile

    Hi,

I'm Mazz and have been watching the site for a while and it looks good. I am a Manager in IFP and have been in social work in one form or another for 27 years!! Hmm  Still learning every day and trying hard to keep up with all the changes and developments, and look forward to being able to exchange ideas and information with everyone.
