    Time to act over pay

I'm really shocked by the findings of Community Care's survey into the finances of social workers. We all know that it's an undervalued profession, but I never knew so many people were struggling just to make ends.

Figures that jumped out at me include:

    - 38% of the 1,500 social workers who responded are always overdrawn

    - 47% don't save anything each month

    - 66% have debts in addition to their mortgage

    - 37% of those are £10,000 or more in debt

    - 19% say their financial position is unsustainable

    - 60% are considering an alternative career because of it

What does this say about the profession's standing? Today we hear that the income of GP partners has increased by 58% in two years. What does this say about the strength of the profession's representation?

I think it's time social workers stopped saying things like "it's not about the pay" and started sticking up for their rights as well qualified professionals who do a difficult job and change lives. And it's high time pressure was put on the profession's representatives to deliver it.

    What do you reckon?

Cant say that I am overly surprised by the findings of the Comm care survey - sounds like social workers are the same as everyone else, if not a bit better than the average. IIf 47% arent saving anything each month then it means 53% are? Wouldnt have thought 53% of the general population have spare cash to save?

I havent seen the survey results published in Comm Care - are they coming soon?

Those who do manage to save, are only managing modest amounts. I think the overall picture is very worrying for a sector that is striving to recruit and further professionalise. But don't take my word for it - you can find more stats in news on the website homepage. And a full analysis will be available in print and online on 6 March. In how many other professions have 41% of the workforce had to take a second job to survive? Something has to change.

Pay is the single biggest issue I face, in terms of being able to come home and earn a living wage. Most LA jobs advertised at line worker level (not Team Leader level) would represent a pay-cut for me if I were to apply. With housing so expensive, I have no idea how people with families manage. I'd love to come home.....but I also have to face reality.
