Hi all :)

I need some advice please. I am in my first year of MSc and just found out that I am pregnant ( unplanned but wanted as they say Big Smile) . I want to complete this year and take a year break to have the baby. At the moment I am recieving NHS bursary. Will I get anything while on maternity? I have not been able to find any useful info so I hope there is someone here who can help.  Anyone in similar situation?

happy days!

my friend became pregnant in the 1st year and took a year off. She has just returned to do the final year. She looked into every avenue and was told she was entitled to nothing - it has been a real struggle for her and her husband. I hope you have better luck than her!

I am in the same situation! Have you spoken to your university about taking a year out? I haven't yet as I'm worried and not sure whom to speak to, if you have already were they helpful?

do you mean from the bursary people? Highly unlikely I would have thought as if you are planning to rejoin the course they would have to provide what would amount to twice the funding.  And if you quit you have to pay back any bursary youve had over the year (or maybe term).

I've just had a baby after completing my course.  I managed to obtain a relief daycare assistant position, where I did a weekend shift most weeks and through which I managed to get the 26 weeks worked to claim maternity allowance - I managed to boost my average earnings through doing extra shifts in the holidays - not for everyone to work alongside placement and uni, but it did get me some financial help.  There are benefits available like the tax credits etc that would depend on if you have a partner or not, or household income - probably worth trying to get a benefits check from welfare rights to check that out.
