Let's get to know each other and ask any question regarding the course. I'm Sugarbabz, 21, a final year undergraduate student, studying Early Childhood Studies.  I will be starting MA in social work at Keele in Sept 09.

I'm Laura and I'm 29.

I will be starting the MA at Plymouth Uni in september. Unitl then I will continue to work in the mental health field as I have done for last couple of years.

Sugarbabz, I used to live in Stoke / Newcastle and think you will like Keele. The campus is stunning and there used to be lots of good bands playing there (not sure if they still do these days).

Hi, I'm 25 and will be starting my MA at The University of Salford in September.. I'm really looking forward to the course but I'm also quite scared!

Sugarbabz, I had an interview at Keele on 5th December... it'd be funny if you were in the same interview group as me..

Actually, my interview was on the 11th of February. I can't wait as well...but i'm also a bit scared. How can we prepare before September? The only two things that come to my mind is to go shopping for non-jeans trousers, shirt, tank tops, etc for placement and also to get my head around skills, role and job of a social worker and perhaps read daily news on communitycare.

What do you guys think?

I'm from London, moved to Birmingham for uni and can't wait to move to Keele.  I'm actually worried about the bursary? Does anyone on here understand it? I don't know how I will pay for my accommodation yet, i believe we can't work whilst studying for MA.

I think we can work whilst studying, we just might be too busy...

I'm 24 and finished my BA in Sociology last summer. I'm now travelling in Canada before coming back to Canterbury to do my MA. I don't understand the bursary too..I've assumed it'll be enough to live on, but from what I've read on here, it probably won't be. What do other people do to supplement their bursary?

Just read as much as you can about SW ethics and how they relate to practice and most importantly, be yourself! It is very relaxed and they do put you at ease.. You will be fine! You might even enjoy it :)

I'm looking forward as well. Can't wait to start. I'm hoping to get a job as a support worker whilst studying for the masters from September. I've been told by 3 social workers that the experience helps with the theoretical aspects. I just pray I get a job in the new city that I'm moving to. @ Fran...I'm moving away as well but i will be living at a private accommodation. I'm still focusing with uni work-I'm in my final year. @ Ariom...I've met you on socialworkforum...it's nice to see you here. A question to everyone..what do we wear to placement? uniform or any non-jeans outfit?

Hi everyone, I'm Emma and i'm 25 and I will be starting the MA in social work at the UEA in sept 09. I can't wait to get started! I graduated from Hull uni in 2006 with a degree in gender studies sociology and anthropology and since then I've moved back to Norfolk and have been working in a therapeutic residential home for 'looked after children' and then I moved to a residential transition unit for young people with profound learning disabilities and complex needs. I can't wait to go back to uni and do the MA though, I will (hopefully) carry on working in my job at the weekends.

Bring on september!!!

Hello people, I'm starting my MA at Hull in September. I'm really looking forward to the next two years it but am also nervous of the workload, particularly being able to juggle work, studying and family life. I've been a support worker for the last 4 years working with adults with learning disabilities within a secure psychiatric unit. Best wishes to everybody and here's hoping the next two years will be truly memorable!

Hi all. I'm starting the MA this September at the Uni of Wolverhampton. Good thing is I live in Wolverhampton so this is the best uni for me as I am a single parent who needs to manage work, study and a 6yr old boy. Looking forward to Sept.

I haven't seen anyone else on here who is going to Plymouth!

Will I be the only person on the course, I wonder?! lol.

Top 50 Contributor

Well, i don't know anyone from this site that is going to Keele in September but i'm certain that i won't be the only one. During my interview, there was a girl that got a place and she said that was the only uni she applied to, so she will be there in September and there was another bloke who got in as well and i think that was his only option as well.

I'm certain you won't be the only one.

I got a 2:1 for my undergraduate. Yippy!!!

Hi Andrew,

I'm moving to England from Edinburgh to do the MSW, I thought I was the only person moving from Scotland to do this course so nice to meet you.

Are you going to halls? I'm not sure if I am yet.

Can I just mention to all of you who are hoping to work to earn money while you do your MA, be prepared for the fact that you are unlikely to have time for a paid job as well as the space to think and study. I speak from experience! I would also just advise you to not buy any books, they are hideously expensive and not necessarythe MA course requires you to unlearn a lot of what you know, regardless of your background or field. - and buying books can become a bit addictive when you feel you don't know enough. Everything you need can come from uni library or online.

Top 75 Contributor

Thanks for the above post, it's reassuring to know that the MA approach is one which you describe.  I have been having a crisis of confidence about starting the MSW as my first degree is not a social sciences one so I like the sound of having to unlearn a lot of what you know already.  Also useful to know that buying a load of books is unnecessary!

Thanks, Esti

Yeah im applying for halls, nice to meet ya too. Im starting to worry about finances and am not sure if i should have stayed in Scotland for funding, But ah well just gotta make the best of it. Have u found much funding for ure course in england ?

Top 50 Contributor

Has anyone received information for their course? I was given a conditional offer for September and i have sent my result to the chosen uni last week Monday with no reply yet. Do you think i should contact them? Have you all received the necessary information for your course?

Grateful for your response

I've had an invite to an occupational health interview but that is all.

Thanks

Hi Zander

I can't get funding for the course in england as you have to be resident in england for 3 yrs before the start of the course.  The english system say scottish residents should apply to the sscc for funding but the sscc say they wont fund anyone studying outside scotland.

I also thought I should have stayed put for funding but of course our system is different to the english one and they don't automatically give bursaries to all sw students.  I got a letter from edinburgh a few weeks back saying that I would not be recommended for a bursary anyway so psychologically it has freed me up to go to england.  Just need to borrow like crazy now!
