Not sure if you caught our story this morning on Castlebeck but it warns of more such cases due to the current state of training (based on the views of a couple of people involved in training people in positive behaviour support).

Here's a quote from one trainer:  "They bring in trainers who are ex-military, police or special hospitals to train care staff working with people who are difficult but not dangerous," he said.  “This is not done out of malice but out of ignorance,” he said.

I think the military may have a place in providing training to staff in respect of some client groups. But learning difficulties?? No, my instinct is definitely not..

Its surprising how many LD providers offer induction training in all the standard things (H&S, fire, food satefy, manual handling, crisis intervention etc) but few seem to train staff in understanding what a Learning Difficulty actually is!! And so adopting a CB training blanket approach to people with LD is never going to work unless there is already an embedded understanding of what it actually means to have a Learning Difficulty..

Many  people still have difficulty in knowing the difference between learning difficulty and mental health in general, on seeking to get planning permission for a community day centre, I was appalled at the ignorance shown by the general public, who seemed to think I was intending to drop a load of axe wielding pychopaths amongst them

The main Trade Union for staff in Special Hospitals is the POA (Prison Officers Association) - says it all really!
