Ok - this is the place to list all those confusing social care acronyms that lots of professionals routinely use and others (including me) sometimes don't understand! You can also ask for the meaning of acronyms you have come across here too.

CAF = Common Assessment Framework

TAC = Team Around the Child

LAC = Looked After Children

CAMHS = Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service

 Excellent acronyms Kathy! We're really starting to build up quite a list now

I remember having luch some years ago with a group of doctors at our local hospital canteen. During the conversation one doc was discussing how he had a CTA that morning and a few others joined in to say " Oh I hate CTAs" and "the last CTA I had died " etc etc. Not wishing to sound ignorant I resisted asking what CTA meant until i could contain my curiuosity no longer. So I meekly asked "Whats a CTA?" There were 7 medical staff sat around the table and not one could tell me what it was LOL. We all found this highly amusing and various attempts were made to clarify it. Turned out it meant "Contrary To Advice" i.e. patient wishing to leave hospital or refusinf treatment against medical advice. So be careful with these or you could end up with egg on your face LOL

NQSW - Newly Qualified Social Worker

DCSF - Department of Curtains and Soft Furnishings (remember: Schools are more important than Families in a Child's life)

BASW - British Association of Social Workers

PQSW - Post Qualifying award in Social Work

APT - Adolescent Preventative Team (love than one - what better than preventing adolescence!!)

NSPCC - hopefully too obvious

LEA - Local Education Authority

MIS - Management Information System / CAFIS - Children & Families Information System / numerous other variables depending on LA

LA - Local Authority

CBT - Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (increasingly used)

ADP - Anti-Discriminatory Practice (especially good for baffling non SW's - like the GP story above)

CPC - Child Protection Conference / stick and R in somewhere for the review

IS / RS / FS - initial, review and final Strategy meetings (pre-child protection)

s.47 - Section 47 (of the CA'89) - (not forgetting s.17, s.31, s.32 etc etc etc)

CA'89 - Children Act 1989 (plus loads of other Acts of Parliament similarly abbreviated on files)

PP - Police Protection (and NOT PPO as it is often mistakenly called - no order required the police just do it)

EPO - Emergency Protection Order

ICO / CO - Interim Care Order / Care Order

PR - Parental Responsibility

IAT - Initial Assessment Team

Anyone remember the old ones than can still be found on some of the old files to raise a lot of head scratching - JOLT (Juvenile Offender Liaison Team), DCFT (Dept of Child and Family Therapy), DCFP (as before but P stands for Psychiatry), ESN (don't ask), the more recent DHSS and DSS (precursers of DWP)

old SW qualifications - CSS and CQSW which predated the DipSW

(I need to stop - I can't believe how many there are!!)

Don't start on the old ones!  Anyone remember Part II part II 1/2 Part III.   Part II warden assisted Part II 1/2 bit more care (:-)) Part III residential care.

STS Short term stay - got told off for using that one recently.

Just another one - you know how people use TLC (tender loving care) when people aren't being actively treated?  Years ago people were said to be "in Rose Cottage" ....strange.  I was going to get into the euphamisms of dying but won't.

I have found lots of acronyms that doctors use RUG RATS and other codes for mistakes when the patients have died and they do not know what causes . Simply go to John Radcliff University site and do your homework it is highlighting stuff. Did you know the EW's with limited training in medical fields train the doctors to give evidence , even identify certian personalities . The research is shredded in high profile cases such as Sally Clark sorry to drone on about that Meddows again, however it all comes back to him first diagnosing MSBP.
