hi,
can any one help me please? I have my last uni interview tomoz, been unsuccessful with the other 3 :(
social workers have to use the law and social policy in their work. outline some of the advantages and disadvantages you see in any piece of relevant law or social policy you are familiar with?
they are looking for some knowledge of law and social policy and the ability to reflect on some the dilemmas of appliying law?
Am really stuck on this the only i can think of is "sarah's law" or maybe "every child matters"
please please help me????
Yes tnat is what they are looking for- to see that you know something about the career you are hoping to enter, and can analyse or appreciate the dilemas involved.
Every child matters is a piece of social policy that governs the entire provision of children's services in this country- not just on social work, but in education, health, etc. The related children's law is the Children Act 1989, which sets out the criteria and procedure for safeguarding children.
Sarah's Law as far as I know, has no legal status etc- it is an American law that was called for by the mother of Sarah Payne after her abduction and murder. Saying that however, we seem to be moving towards it here with the recent publicity about parents being able to find out if their children are coming into contact with sex offenders.
Good luck with your interview.
If you haven't worked under a particular piece of legislation then it might be more productive to look at social policy - some more obvious policies can throw up interesting debates - eg policy as to how benefits or council houses are allocated.
Benefits - supporting those in need, or keeping people in a poverty trap?
Housing - housing is given to those most in need, but what happens when you put all the people with the most severe needs on an estate together?
Good luck!
