Social Workers deserve the Best Social Work is great work but it can be very tough on those who carry it out. In the process of helping others it is vital not to neglect our own professional development or to fail to look after ourselves. Sometimes it's the very best social workers who focus so much on work and neglect their learning or in the process of advocating for others leave themselves exposed. Therefore every worker should protect themselves through membership of an organisation which stands up for social workers - as individuals in times of trouble and for our profession when social work needs to protect its interests. All this of course is in order to serve people well. Times are hard with pay cuts and increases in fees so it must be tempting to try to make ends meet by saving money where membership is not compulsory and hoping that you will not face problems at work. However, social work is under more pressure than ever and thousands of social workers every year can find themselves in a position where their jobs and even their whole careers are under threat. Sometimes in the case of students before you've even started. BASW offers a range of membership fees to suit your circumstances and easy payment methods to spread the load. However the best news of all is that even our maximum fee charged only to experienced social workers is the Best Value in Social Work. At our very top rate BASW provide all the services of professional association and trade union for £240 which - please work it out - is less than the price of a daily bar of chocolate. In fact BASW is such good value that you may find you can also join other apparently less costly professional bodies. However, there is no-one as comprehensive as BASW. No other organisation can match the BASW offer. BASW is independent of any Government or vested interest. BASW is led by social workers. Members of Council and National Committees, BASW Chief Executive and National Managers are all social workers. BASW is democratically accountable to social workers via its elected Honorary Officers, Council and National Committees. BASW has offices, professional teams and a trade union in all four countries of the UK. BASW is the official representative of UK social workers at European and Global level through its membership of the International Federation of Social Workers. BASW has the only trade union for social workers. The Social Workers Union(SWU) is listed with the Trade Union Certification Officer and certified independent. SWU has statutory rights to support you with your employer and is the best friend you could ever have if faced by any of the four Care Councils. Membership of SWU is free to BASW members and because SWU only works for social workers it can concentrate on the things that really matter to us. BASW is experienced and reliable. Working for social workers for 42 years we are at record membership levels with £millions of assets and sound partnerships providing professional indemnity insurance, sound finance and the best legal advice. BASW is the largest professional association for social workers and has grown at more than 8% per year for the last 3 years. BASW gets things done. 1000 social workers a year are supported through difficulties. BASW is listened to by Governments at all levels. BASW advocates in Parliaments, Care Councils and the High Court. With some 11% of our total membership who are Independent Social Workers - BASW also gives special attention to this important and innovative area of practice. BASW operates to the highest standards of professional practice. BASW owns the British Journal of Social Work, publishes magazines and books, holds conferences on the crucial issues, sets the agenda for others with its Code of Ethics and enables you to record your own professional progress. BASW speaks out fearlessly on your behalf. BASW features in the national, regional and local media daily - saying what our members think and what they want us to say. BASW relies on its members for its finances, its knowledge, its credibility and its vital independence. Members ensure that BASW is relevant to your daily concerns, assertive of the values and the importance of our profession and formidably challenging on your behalf. As a member of BASW you ensure that BASW will be there to protect and serve you well. As a member of BASW you ensure that BASW will be there to protect and serve social work well. At our very top rate BASW provide all the services of professional association and trade union for £240

But cheaper to join the College of Social Work (SCIE) - £60 plus the Union of your choice - or none at all. So if Union membership is less than £180 you have undercut BASW/SWU.

BASW you brought so much joy to the social work profession throughout 2011, you deserve everything coming to you in 2012. Keep up the good works.

Hilton - try looking up the definition of 'paragraph' and then try using that new found knowledge!

SWU is so good that BASW is struggling to even give membership away to its members - or perhaps it shows just how few of BASW's members are actually practising social workers!

I feel I was recently discriminated against for breaking house rules. I was punished and felt that other worse offenders were not. I took my punishment and have been a less enthusiastic member since. I felt there was one rule for some and a different rule for others.

Now I see Hilton blatantly advertising on care space which, if I am not mistaken is a clear breach of rule 4.

If you have strict rules you can't cherry pick who they apply to.

Hi Simeon,

Nice touchfinder.

Hi

I think that although the message could certainly be construed as being an advert, in the current context, in which social workers are considering whether to join BASW or COSW, the information is relevant and adds to the debate. It has also already attracted a number of responses.

However, I will contact Hilton to advise him not to let any future posts stray into advertising.

Well, I certainly got the impression it belonged in the advertising section, with attached fee.

Simeon, I don't agree with you, it is the rules that are wrong.

A social work forum should have all sorts of views, put in all sorts of individual ways, this is what allows people to make informed choices.

If Hilton wants to advertise, let him and SWAN and any other organisation that deserves a voice.

(Through links;0pportunity for revenue.)

If Hilton etc. want to advertise let them pay!
