Load of bollocks.

Child has multiple injuries treated as NAI. Child subsequently found to have brittle bone disease.

The only scandal in this one is the f***ing ponderous nature of the Courts in determining permanency.

Oh hindsight is a woderful thing

Why is it framed that the Social Workers took 18 months to recognise the brittle bone disease?

Christopher Booker has turned his formidable intellect and incisive analytical skills to this case:

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/debate/article-2027272/South-Gloucestershire-social-workers-hand-child-falsely-claim-abused.html

Some highlights:

"Forcibly separating happy, well-cared for children from loving, responsible parents creates a tragedy which will last for the rest of the lives of all those involved"

"Snatching children for no good reason"

"On such dubious grounds, the social workers may arrive to snatch children from their beds, all too often accompanied by a gang of four or more policemen, who seem only too willing to comply with any demands the social workers make"

"I know of cases where children have been groomed by the social workers and their foster carers to believe that their parents no longer love or want them"

SLAMMED!!

The blog has been taken down to add some comment to it from a child protection social worker - to make it clearer what a social worker's role is in these type of cases (it appeared there was some confusion among social workers I spoke to about this) and because some were interested in whether it was ever appropriate for them, as a professional with a unique perspective on a family, to challenge a medical diagnosis they disagreed with. I felt this would add value to the blog.

The word 'slammed' in the headline was meant to refer to social workers having been slammed by newspapers for this mistake, even though - as social workers have pointed out - doctors, not social workers, diagnose medical conditions. Apologies if this caused confusion.

I am sorry but there is a level of ridiculous journalism in community care, and the blog fitted the bill.

And the cowardice of it - take down the blog and pretend it wasn't written?

When can we expect this "child protection worker" to give us the benefit of his advice and relate it to a case they did not work on, so we can see this blog again?

And have the ability to comment on it?

There was no intention to pretend it hadn't been written, just to update it with some comment that might satisfy the questions some readers had asked following the case - such as whether social workers should ever challenge a medical diagnosis they disagree with - and thus make it a more useful piece of content. We often update stories and blogs with new information, quotes etc.

The original blog was simply designed to generate a bit of debate about what appeared to be a slightly grey area for some social workers who said they felt advice/perspective on such cases would be useful. I appreciate not all feel this way. The blog, with general comments from social workers, will be published shortly.

How long does it take to rewrite the blog Camilla?

Top 500 Contributor

Ah yes, apologies for delay. I'd like to publish but I'm afraid I'm still waiting on a few things beyond my control (e.g. sign off on quotes as they're all on the record and using real names etc.) As soon as I can publish, I will.
