Ok, I feel I have to ask - is anyone doing anything for the royal wedding? Anyone know of any street parties?

Is anyone having an anti-royal wedding party, dressed as Oliver Cromwell perhaps?

Or are you just going to ignore the whole thing and hope it goes away?

Exactly my thought process. Wish them well and all but couldn't care less about it and am taking advantage of an extended holiday period to go away.

Planning a BBQ at placement (homeless young people) -- none of us are especially royalists but no reason why we can't all celebrate the extra bank holiday together. I'm going to attempt to record it as being a diversity activity on the grounds of celebrating own culture (ie. being British in this case).

Why on earth would you want to "celebrate" being british?

You could always auction your invite on Ebay!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was at Trent Bridge earlier in the week and then Grace Road yesterday - got sunburned!

Whoever ticked this poor, why don't you try and answer the question. Is it because the truth hurts? Eliteist, Arrogant, Up own bottoms, Warped view of how the rest of the world views us, Pompous, Corrupt, and broke.  What is there to celebrate?

Am waiting for the crap to role in.

i think it will be a great day, i'm very happy for them in glasgow we have a strong republican community (hailhail-hahah) and its great winding them up- taking the ph are you? and if they are working it-taking the extra cash are you? the look of confusion is quite hilarious.

David Cameron says so, so it must be right.

"David Cameron <...>  says 29 April will be a "chance [to]... celebrate the great things about our country".

Also, to get the funds for a BBQ out of our client involvement fund, we have to show that the proposed event involves equality and diversity :P (Bizarrely, because of the royal wedding, they will pay for cake anyway - go figure.)

Plus in any case, how much excuse do you really need for a party?

See Camden Council are refusing to cooperate with alternative republican events. It seems some excuses for a street party are more valid than others and why do people Wish the happy couple well. There are far more deserving couples who need good wishes rather than this sychophantic twaddle, for people who will never understand the word hardship.

Have the invites gone out already? I've bought myself a lovely new hat adorned with feathers from endangered species and a nice bri-nylon trouser suit but don't seem to have received anything in the post. Can anyone advise?

You could marry an idiot prince.

Sad to see some of the derogatory comments here. Isn't Social work about promoting ethics and values such as 'non judgemental, unbiased, neutral, impartial, tolerant, open-minded and objective??

I personally hope they have a happy and trouble free day.

There are a lot of people with nicely scrubbed brains on here.

Making this statement is judgemental, biased, partizan, partial, intollerant, closed minded and irrational.

I would also like to know whose ethics and values are to be promoted.

exactly. a happy couple and a wedding but hey, they are royalty so we can abuse them. now, if they were gypsies or muslims or some ethnic minority there would be not a peep. nothing more than casyal abuse tolerated by bigots.

Back from hols, to find a new bank hol is quickly approaching - result !

Could be worse. The tories are considering scrapping May Day bank hol (because of it's association with international worker's days) in favour of Waterloo Day or somesuch. We will be celebrating killing loads of our new allies. Whilst it's important to recognise the fallen in VE Day etc., it seems a bit gratuitous to initiate a new kill fest.

These pompous people thought that we would destroy precious minutes of our lives stuck in front of a box watching them if they gave us a day off. How vain? What arrogance? WTF? I plan to spend some quality time with my daughter whilst being careful to avoid the various channels which are broadcasting the royal nonsense. I wonder if I can claim a days TV licence fee?

While 200000 public sector workers lose their jobs the super rich are rubbing our faces in their excesses. It is thoroughly shameful

at the cost of 100m I cant disagree there - surely it would have been better to have done an austerity wedding to show at least some semblance of empathy with their supposed subjects?

I know the argument is that it creates a feel good factor and brings in tourism etc so its worth every penny but would a wedding that cost 10/20m have any less effect?

If we had a referendum on hanging it would be overwhelmingly for.

I suspect the same would apply to the Monarchy.

Frightening to think the majority of people we encounter are totally deluded and have the brainpower of Nick Griffin.

Is it nature or nurture?

Um. Worryingly, I think this was supposed to be an "austerity wedding". Note, Kate's dress used much less fabric than Princess Di's and The Duke of Edinburgh wore the same (unearned) uniform and medals that he did for the last couple of royal do's.

**I will catch the highlights again later on** :)

They do pay the taxpayer a fair amount of cash too, what with the income from their estates going to the government which gives them a proportion back as the civil list iirc.
