What is your view on therapeutic residential placements, anyone had any issue's with the move on time of a young person?  If someone stays in one until 18 then what?  Any postitive/negative experiences to share?

Theraputic communities and placements are usually really good. (Very dependent on management).

I've worked in a few and they do make a difference as everyone has to muck in together.

The problem for young people is that at age 18 a lot of childrens SW depts often drop these clients as they 'no longer fit the age criteria'. But there is a get out claus to this... if the young person is in education they can stay on untill they are 21.

I hope this helps.

I've found them highly variable in how good they are frankly. There are some excellent ones of course, but also many that are terrible - high profit motive for company, poor pay and training for staff, poor level of care and therapeutic provision.

One has to choose extremely carefully imo.

Hi,

in relation to the 21 yr rule. Does the yp have to be eduated by the theraputic community or can the yp be at a local college?

Thanks
