Woke up this morning to the news that the state of Georgia had finally executed Troy Davis. Unbelievable that something as barbaric as judicial murder can happen in the West, right under the gaze of Barrack Obama.

Next up to be executed is a woman with an IQ of 72 - can these people sink any lower?

All this talk of facilitating democracy in Middle Eastern countries while this stuff is happening on their own doorstep. Jeez...

Totally agree with TB on this. it seems like, when an election looms in the US, it's seen as useful to execute a black person to appease the rabid right. It's Bill Clinton also approved an execution as Governor of Arkansas during his Presidential campaign. Shameful.

Same the world over.    All about retribution.     And please, no one mention deterrent.

The numbers don't support the deterrent argument anyway. I recall reading a state by state breakdown per capita (including before and after in states where the death penalty had either been removed or instigated). Interestingly the states where capital punishment is used have higher murder rates per capita than those where it is not available.

But as you say, Shirack, it satisfies the base human desire for tribal revenge.

Cheers,

Stuart
