Priory Group, the UK’s leading independent provider of mental healthcare, will help to change the lives of more people suffering with complex neurological and behavioural needs thanks to the extension of its Priory Highbank Centre in Bury.
Four additional beds mean that the Highbank Centre’s Elton Unit can provide long-term neuro-rehabilitation care for up to 28 people aged between 18 and 65.
These fully-equipped beds will be monitored 24 hours a day by a team of trained carers who have been recruited as a result of the extension.
The highly-specialist services within the Elton Unit, which is based in Walshaw, aims to give people under its roof the care and support to live as independently as their condition will allow.
Some residents take part in weekly activities including arts and crafts, music therapy, games, community trips, and theme night.
The Unit is located five miles away from its sister hospital the Priory Highbank Centre in Walmersley, which provides rehabilitation to people who have extremely complex neurological needs, including those in a vegetative state.
Both centres have helped to support International Brain Awareness Week, which took place between 15th and 19th March.
Priory Highbank Hospital Director Helen Powell, said: “This expansion will enable us to continue to meet the growing needs of people in the North-West and further afield.
“The specialist care that we provide helps to improve the lives of our patients and enables them to live as independently as possible throughout their lives.
“The Elton Unit is unique in the care that it provides and to be able to care for four more people is a major step forward for us.”
