Priory Glasgow praised in major Care Commission report

PRIORY GLASGOW PRAISED IN MAJOR CARE COMMISSION REPORT

6/4/10

The Priory Hospital in Glasgow has been singled out as an example of good practice in the Care Commission’s ‘Making the Grade’ report.

The report provides the first benchmark of the quality of care provision in Scotland.

The Priory Hospital Glasgow is cited for its electronic mental health learning package for care staff called ‘Foundations for Growth’.

The report states that ‘this allowed staff to learn at their own pace.   Managers can monitor progress and provide support where necessary.     All staff received orientation and induction when they started working at the hospital, which included mandatory participation in Foundations for Growth.’

The report continued ‘increased knowledge of mental health issues amongst staff will lead to greater awareness of how staff can meet the needs of people using the service.    The hospital was involving patients in their staff development in a number of ways such as holding a patient forum meeting and inviting a patient representative to take part in a staff development event.2

It was acknowledged that ‘comments from people who used the service showed that they found the nursing and therapy staff friendly and caring, and felt that this contributed to the feeling of safety and to their recovery.   Cheerful and friendly housekeeping and restaurant staff also contributed to the sense of belonging and care.’

The Priory Hospital Glasgow is an independent, acute psychiatric hospital, specialising in the management and treatment of mental health issues.

Opened in 1993, the hospital has a 42-bed inpatient facility with further capacity for day care and outpatient services and is well equipped to deal with a wide range of mental health and psychiatric patient needs including addictions, eating disorders, depression, anxiety and self confidence issues.

It has been graded as ‘good’ or ‘very good’ by the Care Commission for its quality of information, quality of care and support, quality of environment, staffing and management and leadership.

Gair Stott, hospital director at The Priory Hospital Glasgow said:   “To receive independent verification and acknowledgement of the quality of care and the professionalism of our staff is excellent recognition for the hospital.

“We are proud to be singled out by the Care Commission as an example of best practice as we strive to lead the way in the provision of mental health care and treatment in Scotland.

“The key to the hospital’s success is caring and professional staff that work well together and create a friendly and therapeutic environment.”
