  • Crime is down, brilliant news. Well done, everybody

by Adam McCulloch The reduction in crime in the UK is fantastic news and reflects well on the government, police, social workers, probation officers and, yes, car manufacturers (the days of the 'pooled' Ford Fiesta are well and truly in the past it seems). We should also show due respect to garden...

  • ECCA: More councils fail to ensure fee rises cover inflation

The English Community Care Association has published a report saying more and more councils are either freezing fees for care home providers or failing to keep up with inflation at a time of increased costs from rises in the minimum wage and staff holiday entitlements. It's an age-old (well post...

  • The Cost of Caring

The Guardian published an article this week about the germination of a New Deal for Carers and the results of the consultations that they ran over a period of a couple of months. I hadn’t known this had been going on so thought I’d look at some of the interim findings. Poor Information. There...

  • Re: Kinship Carers

The issue is not about financial gain or not loving the children its about being able to have the choice and if these children need stability and someone their for them maybe the last thing someone wants to do is go out and leave these children until they feel settled and safe, and how can anyone in...

  • Re: Kinship Carers

Sorry I have read and unable to quote the bit I wish to use, but how old is the grandmother? and how many children did she have placed with her? I feel its amazing to be told to go out and get a job, and if there is a disability involved also then I would say trying to get a job is almost impossible...

  • Re: Kinship Carers

I feel that if it saves the children or whom ever else the informal carer is caring for the heartache of being away from there family, why should they not be paid it costs money, people have to leave there jobs and can not be expected to live on thin air, It would also save the government money and help...

  • Re: Are unqualified staff dangerous?

No they are not, what is dangerous is an individual persons unwillingness to learn and move on, we are all unqualified to start with and we are taught by the people who know best the service user and their informal support. By listening and hearing what a person wants we can learn alot. The only reason...

  • Re: Roles and tasks of social work document published

Here's a list of the members of the General Social Care Council all of whom are appointed by the NHS Appointments' Commission. They are pretty much all senior figures and there's no one who leaps out at you as being a "frontline voice". But then again, the GSCC would say they are...

  • Green Paper: Don't forget disabled people

by Mithran Samuel Adult social care has re-emerged in recent years as a political issue of some salience. The story count on the sector in the national press has picked up notably (with indignity in care and the prospect that care fees will drain people of their savings and rob them of their homes being...

  • Re: Do young people need stricter parenting?

Good point Ed. In this country we seem to have this gaping generational divide that they don't have in many European countries. I was in holiday in France last year and remember going into a number of bars and cafes and finding people of all ages there, which was great. There seems to have never...
