It seems to be a persistent theme that interprofessional communication and lack of person centered care is identified as a colossal issue. I feel, looking back on recent years, that the government’s attempt to prevent such cases has not only continued to damage the effective-ness of Social Workers but made cases like Peter Connelly, Daniel Pelka, Hamzah Khan, Victo-ria Climbié, Caleb Ness and Kennedy McFarlane all the more possible to happen. With new information systems being enforced in order to keep detailed notes of each case, Social Workers are now inundated with admin tasks resulting in less time to spend with each service user and fundamentally to the detriment of social work. In an ongoing study by Harry Ferguson, he discovered that there is an average of 15 minutes spent with each Service user, and worryingly in some cases it can be as little as 5 minutes. Now, if I – a social work student only in her first year – can identify the problems, why is it hard for governments and local councils to look further into the cases and find a long term solution instead of finding a quick fix and letting the situation pass by.
