Regeneration in Wales The decline of the coal industry left the Welsh valley community of Abercynon with significant social and economic problems, while people also felt abandoned by public services. However, instead of feeling beaten down, they clubbed together to tackle its problems through the Bryncynon Strategy, a community project dedicated to improving the health and well-being of local residents. Its success has now being recognised by the King’s Fund and pharmaceutical giant GlaxoSmithKline through their annual GSK IMPACT awards. (Pictures: Ian Homer) Last updated: 5 April 2011
