Urgent action needed to save island homes

If the government fails to provide extra funding to keep nursing
homes open on the Isle of Wight many older people may not survive
the journey to the mainland, the Isle of Wight director of social
services warned last week.

Charles Waddicor is calling for an urgent government cash
injection to fund nursing homes to provide for a long-term solution
to the current shortage of beds. Waddicor wants a meeting between
the authority, care home owners and the government to address the
difficulties.
