New ministers appointed to Scottish cabinet

Newly appointed first minister, Jack McConnell, has made three
key changes of great significance for social care in announcing his
new cabinet.

Cathy Jamieson takes over the post vacated by McConnell in
becoming minister for education and young people in a portfolio
which covers child care services. Jamieson has not held a
ministerial post before. She is qualified social worker who, prior
to her election as MSP, was director of Who Cares Scotland, the
support and campaigning organisation for young people who have been
looked after.

Malcolm Chisholm, has been promoted to minister for health and
community care. Chisholm was previously deputy minister for
community care and now replaces Susan Deacon.

Iain Gray becomes minister for social justice. He moves from
being deputy minister for justice though was originally deputy
minister for community care when the Scottish parliament was first
established. Gray is a former development officer with Oxfam.
