New education minister delegates responsibility for schools

Cathy Jamieson, the newly appointed minister for education and
young people in the Scottish executive, has delegated day-to-day
running of schools to a deputy to concentrate on the other major
parts of her portfolio.

Jamieson, a former social worker and development officer with
Who Cares? Scotland, an organisation for young people who have been
in care, has faced fierce criticism from teachers’
organisations and opposition MSPs for devaluing education.

In response, Jamieson said: “This should not be seen as a
demotion of the importance of teachers.” The schools’ remit
will go to her deputy minister for education, Liberal Democrat MSP
Nicol Stephen.
