Cold Comfort – The Social and Environmental Determinants of Excess
Winter Death in England, 1986-96
Paul Wilkinson et al, The Policy Press,
Marston Book Services, PO Box 269, Abingdon, Oxon, OX14 4YN,
£10.95
Britain has a very large winter excess of
mortality, which is greater than in most other countries in
continental Europe. This is the first study to make a direct
connection between the risk of winter mortality and housing quality
in England, demonstrating that people living in homes that are
difficult or costly to heat are at increased risk of cold-related
death. It will be of interest to everyone concerned with public
health and housing policy.
