A
£1.5m public education campaign targeting binge drinking by
young Scots will be launched next month as part of the Scottish
executive’s Plan for Action on Alcohol Problems.
Speaking
in Glasgow at a conference organised by the executive, Alcohol
Focus Scotland and the National Association of Alcohol Action
Teams, deputy health minister Mary Mulligan said: “This campaign
aims to challenge the myth that binge drinking is harmless fun,
clever or cool.”
The
executive’s plans include improved education for children through
schools and youth clubs, educational and support resources for
parents, an extra £1m for multi-disciplinary local alcohol
action teams, better recording of alcohol problems by health
professionals and the appointment of a national alcohol liaison
officer to support the local alcohol action teams.
The
campaign on binge drinking will feature television, radio and
billboard adverts.
