Too soon for verdict on policies

The government has said that it is too soon to say whether new
policies are benefiting children.

An update to a report for this month’s United Nations review of the
UK’s children’s rights record, produced by the Children and Young
People’s Unit, says that “it is too early to report on the outcomes
of our new approach and we recognise that we still have much to
do.” The update provides a full account of developments in social
inclusion policy.

The original report was published in 1999 for the UN committee
which oversees the convention on the rights of the child. The
committee will meet to consider the report and update on 19
September. “We look forward to providing a more comprehensive
picture of the UK position in 2004,” the update says.
