Posters amplify truancy message

A new round of truancy sweeps has been ushered in by a poster
campaign in high streets and shopping centres over the Christmas
period.

The posters send a message to parents that they have an important
role to play in ensuring young people attend school. Previous
truancy sweeps have found that around half of schoolchildren
stopped were with a parent. Fast track prosecutions of parents of
persistent truants will be introduced in eight areas in January:
Tower Hamlets, Birmingham, Newcastle, Wakefield, Blackpool, North
East Lincolnshire, Thurrock and Sandwell.
