A chance to drive up language standards

Asian women in Yorkshire are being given help with the theory part
of the driving test thanks to a course run by a Leeds-based
education charity.

Learning Partnerships teaches Pakistani and Bangladeshi women, who
often have difficulty passing the exam because of language
barriers.

The course helps the women learn about different parts of the car,
road signs, the test application form and mock theory tests.

Tutor Cathy France said: “The vocabulary of driving is new to our
students. If they don’t know what a catalytic converter is in
English, they won’t understand it in their own language.”
