Successful children’s trust bids announced

Children’s minister Margaret Hodge and health minister Stephen
Ladyman announced that 35 out of the 45 bids for pathfinder
children’s trusts have been successful, writes Amy
Taylor.

The number of successful bids is much higher than expected, the
figure had been forecast at 15-20, and a doh spokesperson confirmed
that they will each still receive between
£60,000-£100,000.

The “pathfinder” trusts will bring together children’s social
services, education and health services into a single structure to
ensure services are child centred. The new model aims to end
situations where children with multiple needs have to undergo many
assessments with different professionals and attend numerous
appointments.

There is no set model for children’s trusts, allowing local
authorities to tailor them to local needs. Subsequently the trusts
will vary in size and shape and may involve partners from other
statutory agencies and the independent and voluntary sector.

The 35 “pathfinder” trusts are pilots, enabling the government
to establish successful models for integrated services at a local
level. The call for more integrated children’s services was one of
the key recommendations from the Victoria Climbie inquiry.
