Kurdish family loses battle to stay in UK

A Kurdish mother and her four children were deported this week
after 13 months in Dungavel Detention Centre in Scotland and a
protracted fight to claim asylum.

Yurdugal Ay and her children, Beriwan, 14, Newroz, 13, Medya, eight
and their brother Dilovan, 12, were flown to Germany and told to
pursue their application there.

Ay and her husband, Salih, who has not been heard of since his
deportation back to Turkey last year, originally fled to Greece and
then Germany 15 years ago. They brought their family to Britain in
1999 when Germany was about to expel them.

Last week their lawyer lodged a new asylum application for the
children and they say they will pursue the claim from Germany.
