Labour MP to return to social care roots

Hilton Dawson is to step down as an MP at the next general
election and return to social work.

The Labour member for Lancaster and Wyre was elected in 1997. He
has served on standing committees on the Adoption and Children
Bill, Leaving Care Bill and the Health and Social Care Bill. He
introduced private member’s bills for a children’s
rights commissioner for England three times.

Of his decision, he said: “I could not bear to feel peripheral
to the vast changes which are about to come to children’s
services and children’s lives. The big issues of change will
be fought out far from Westminster.”
