Life expectancy gap persists

Life expectancy in Manchester is lower for both boys and girls
than anywhere else in England or Wales, according to the latest
government statistics.

In 2000-2002 a baby boy born in East Dorset could expect to live
to 79.5 – 8.5 years longer than a baby boy born in Manchester.
Girls in London’s Kensington and Chelsea have the highest
life expectancy at 84.1 years compared to 77.3 years in
Manchester.

Nine of the 10 health authority areas with the lowest life
expectancy for girls were in the north of England. For boys, eight
of the 10 worst were in the north.
