Staff strike over jobs reorganisation

Staff working at a centre for adults with learning difficulties in
north London went on strike for two days this week to protest
against having to reapply for their current jobs.

The 25 Unison members, who work at the Highbury Resource Centre run
by Islington Council, believe they should have a job in
restructured services at the centre without being interviewed. Mike
Calvert, assistant branch secretary at Unison’s Islington branch
said the process was being used “to get rid of a number of
people”.

The council argues that the posts are substantially different.
Meral Ece, executive member for health and social care, said the
council had tried to “take on board” Unison’s concerns and the
plans had been supported by service users and carers.
