If you ask me…

Who has had the biggest influence on you?
Andrew Holman at Community Living. In the day centre I wouldn’t say
boo to a goose but with his support I have been able to speak at
international conferences and set up our own company!

Which professional has been most use to you?
Most professionals I can think of have been pretty hopeless but I
wouldn’t be this far without People First of Norfolk.

If you ran services in your area what would you do
differently?

People would buy their own service – like direct payments but with
the support for people with learning difficulties.

What event most changed your life?
Becoming a self-advocate, getting a job and setting up Action
Unlimited, run by and for people with learning difficulties.

Has any government policy ever done anything for you or
your client group?

Yes, Valuing People is slowly changing things.

What has been your most embarrassing moment?
Saying “erection” instead of “election” in front of 400 people at
Community Care Live.

When were you last angry?
When I found out the government wanted people with learning
difficulties to pass strict rules about consent to have sex. But
after meetings with the Home Office we changed that.

When did you last cry?
When we buried my grandson. He died suddenly from a cot
death.

What would you like to be remembered for?
Through the work I have done.
