Research likely to call for reduction of drug using women in prison

A report due out later this week is expected to call for
alternatives to custody for women whose offending is linked to drug
use, writes Clare Jerrom.

The DrugScope research is expected to say that too many women
are inappropriately sentenced to custody.

The number of women being sent to prison has more than doubled
in a decade. Recent research by the Howard League for Penal Reform
found that 13 women killed themselves in prison last year.

The latest research, due out later this week, is likely to say
that the majority of the public disagreed with women with drug
problems being sent to prison to overcome their addiction.
