Black-led groups need more funding

The government’s commitment to improving mental health among
people from ethnic minorities is not being matched by adequate
funding, according to new research.

The African Caribbean Mental Health Commission report states that
despite black people being reluctant to use statutory mental health
services, black-led voluntary services filling the gap are
under-funded.

Substantial investment in the black voluntary and community sector
is put forward in the report as the best way to improve
matters.

“It makes economic and social sense to fund services that will
prevent people entering a system that we have seen does not help
them get any better,” said Matilda MacAttram, lead researcher on
the report.
