Funding needs to accompany youth green paper

A key figure in youth services called for funding to accompany
the forthcoming youth green paper today, writes Amy
Taylor from Harrogate.

Speaking at the annual Local Government Association conference
in Harrogate, Viv McKee, director of development at the National
Youth Agency, said that some capital investment was required to
smarten up youth clubs and provide activities for young people.

McKee added that she hoped the green paper would make it clear
that local authorities were responsible for young people’s
services.

“The one thing the government has never been able to do is
say who is responsible for young people…it’s only the
local authorities with their arrangements for children and young
people that can take this forward,” she said.

McKee concluded that she hoped that young people themselves
would take the green paper’s policies forward to ensure they
would work.
