Cardiff carer caught by client’s camera

The government’s much-heralded telecare initiative could find
itself moving in a rather unexpected direction.

Rather than helping carers monitor their clients, technology was
used by a disabled woman in Cardiff to put her carer under
surveillance.

Beryl Rowe caught a carer stealing from her handbag after
installing hidden cameras in her home.

The CCTV was fitted after she had been targeted by a thief in the
past.

Karen Evans, 39, of Canton, Cardiff, pleaded guilty to theft and a
deception charge and was sentenced to 200 hours of community
punishment and ordered to pay £370 compensation at Cardiff
Crown Court last week.
