Ministers face drug regulation pressure

The government is under fire for rejecting key recommendations
from MPs to tighten regulation of the pharmaceutical industry.

Charity Mind said the Department of Health’s response to a
critical health select committee report, did not allay concerns
that the industry exercised undue influence over the government and
watchdog the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency
(MHRA).

It criticised the government’s failure to accept proposals for
the independent publication of full clinical trials data and the
compulsory disclosure by patient groups and charities of commercial
links with drug companies.

However, it welcomed the government’s commitment to increased
openness at the MHRA.

Other recommendations rejected in the response, published last
week, include the transfer of sponsorship of the industry from the
DH to the Department for Trade and Industry.
