Adults donate £170 per year

Adults in the UK donate an average £170 to charity each per year, a new study from the Charities Aid Foundation and the National Council for Voluntary Organisations has found.

Around 28 million people, nearly 60 per cent of adults, give to charity every month, according to the survey.

In total, £8.2 billion was donated during the financial year 2004/05.

People in the south west of England are most likely to give, while Londoners donate the most per head.

More people gave to medical research than any other cause.

Average giving to the tsunami appeal was £5 a head.

Publication of the research coincides with the launch of a new website from
charity Guidestar UK that includes information on all charities in England and Wales. Partly funded by the government, Guidestar UK aims to provide transparent information about charities to the public.
