The Social Stories approach is a valuable technique for introducing new situations, explaining “hidden” social rules and enabling the reader to understand the feelings of other people, writes Beth Billington.

Written in an informal style this book is a good introduction to the approach. It is suitable for anyone who works with individuals who have ASD, or who already has at least a basic
understanding of ASD and wants to develop their skills in using Social Stories.

It is filled with case examples and stories written for people with ASD of all ages and abilities.

The emphasis on properly preparing to write, and also on evaluating the story is reassuring, and the book is a mine of useful tips and ideas.

Beth Billington has a younger brother with autism, and she is a trainee clinical psychologist, Lancaster University
