STAR RATING: 4/5

For those of you who have just signed up for your level three in care, fear not, this book is for you, writes Geoff Corbishley.

It covers the knowledge requirements for the core competences, with each chapter referencing the NVQ units it was written for.

The presentation has been well-planned: all client groups are given consideration with the use of thought-provoking case examples and there are many activities for readers to do on their own or in groups.

Each chapter concludes with a summary of the key points, some written questions and a further reading list, which includes a brief synopsis of each book recommended.

Throughout the book, the reader is introduced to up-to-date legislation and to theories that inform care practice and these are integrated into case examples, making them more “real” for the reader.

Cleverly, the book uses references and case examples from a wide-range of sources, including TV, plays, newspaper and magazine articles; as well as the more traditional sources and this all contributes to the book feeling  accessible and relevant.

Care Practice should provide an invaluable reference for this year’s candidates, although it will need to be regularly updated if it is to retain its validity for future NVQ students.

Geoff Corbishley is a professional foster carer and NVQ assessor
