People in social care talk about the reality of their role

Anne-Marie Monaghan is operations manager at the Glasgow Learning Disability Partnership, a council scheme to help people with learning difficulties lead healthy lives.

Job description: I manage a team  working on strategic development, commissioning and purchasing of services and performance management across Glasgow.

Skills/qualifications: I have a diploma in youth and community work and a post graduate certificate in social work management.

Grade: principal officer.

Pay:  £38,295.

What’s your job like? Much of the work is about strategy and service development, particularly on new community health and care partnerships. These go live in Glasgow in April and it’s been a particularly challenging but exciting time as we look to develop structures and working arrangements. The biggest challenge will be ensuring consistent standards while retaining local responses to local needs across the city.

Other areas of work include the overview of  purchased services for learning difficulties and negotiating with the 33 provider organisations we do business with. These discussions centre on service design and costs as we seek to recycle our investment to ensure standards. In essence, the job is about creating opportunities for service users to have better lives and that’s what makes it worthwhile.
