What is it?
The Tesco Charity Trust was founded in 1987 and supports local and national charities.
Who runs it?
It is run by a board of trustees, recommended by the main board of Tesco plc. Decisions are made by trustees in conjunction with community co-ordinators based in 36 regions throughout the UK.
How much money does it give away?
Around £360,000 each year.
How big is each grant?
Awards are one-off donations and range between £1,500 and £5,000.
Who or what is the money intended for?
Most grants are awarded to communities where there are local Tesco stores.
What kind of projects are eligible?
The eligibility criteria is very wide, so it may be more helpful to outline areas that fall outside the eligibility criteria. These are:
• Grants to individuals
• Activities that raise funds for subsequent redistribution to other charities or to individuals
• Fundraising events or activities
• Purchase of land or buildings
• Overseas appeals
• Sponsorship or marketing appeals
• Expeditions or overseas travel
• Endowment Funds
• Conference or seminars

How do I apply?
The first step is to write to the Tesco Charity Trust at the address above with brief details of your project. This will ensure that your request is recorded on the current year’s database and included in the distribution of application forms.
When should I apply?
You can write to the Tesco Charity Trust at any time. The closing dates for writing to the Trust will depend on the round for which you are applying. For children’s welfare and education (including special needs schools) it is 31 January each year. Letters received after the closing date will be held on file for the next year’s round.
How are applications assessed?
Application forms for children’s welfare and educational projects will be distributed in February. The closing date for return of completed application forms will be given in accompanying letter. Decisions are communicated by letter in June or early July.
