The government’s disability strategy Improving the Life Chances of Disabled People, launched at the beginning of 2005, was followed by a wave of policy initiatives such as the adults’ services green paper which resulted in the white paper on health and social care. After years of lobbying for disability discrimination legislation and direct payments, it seems that disabled people have finally had their needs recognised with the government even creating a national forum to represent their interests. But there are still issues of concern such as Lord Joffe’s Assisted Dying for the Terminally Ill Bill and the treatment of people with learning difficulties.
