CSCI will replace Behan with internal candidate

Commission for Social Care Inspection chief inspector David Behan will be replaced by an internal candidate when he becomes the Department of Health’s director general for social care.

The CSCI told Community Care it would shortly appoint a successor to Behan, who will leave his post in August or September.

Contenders include director of corporate services Hazel Parker-Brown, director of quality, performance and methods Jonathan Phillips, director of inspection, regulation and review Paul Snell, and director of strategy David Walden.

Meanwhile, CSCI chair Denise Platt revealed that it would introduce a star ratings system for care providers, ranging from one (poor) to four (excellent), in a newspaper interview last week.

These would be based on performance on a range of outcome measures (news, page 9, 15 June). It will consult on the system later this month.

However, Scotland’s Care Commission said this week it had rejected the idea of a single rating for providers, opting instead for a six-level grading system applied to four areas: quality of life, environment, staffing and leaders
