Social Work with Children, Young People and their Families in Scotland

STAR RATING: 5/5

While aimed at student, this overview of social work in Scotland would be of use to anyone seeking information on working with
children and their families, writes Iain McDonald.

It uses learning outcomes, research summaries and activities to reinforce the practice and theory covered by each chapter.

The book’s strength lies in its clarity and comprehensive coverage, particularly the policy context, children’s hearing system, and child protection. The chapter relating to the theories and skills required to work with families is probably the strongest example of this.

The book relies heavily on its up-to-date coverage of Scottish executive policy, especially in relation to interagency working and
the 21st Century Review. Given the tendency of policy and legislation to change in Scotland there will be a need for regular updates to this book for it to remain current and useful.

Iain McDonald is a social worker with Inverclyde Council
