Five steps to better pay

Association of Directors of Social Services president Julie Jones (pictured) believes social workers should grasp every opportunity to boost the profession’s pay. Here she explains how…

OPTIONS FOR EXCELLENCE
We have been working with the government on this, which will help ensure that social workers are employed in professionally respected roles and paid accordingly.

WORKFORCE PLANNING
We need to re-organise the workforce so that professional, qualified social workers carry out tasks appropriate to their skills. Those tasks that do not require a professional qualification should be delegated to other staff. This will save resources which should then be re-invested to ensure that social workers are paid properly.

MARKET FORCES
Competition for recruitment can be used to drive up salaries, although this should not be allowed to divide the profession
along adult/child lines.

PROFESSIONAL IMAGE
The new qualification will help us gain the professional respect we deserve.

MULTIDISCIPLINARY TEAMS
Social workers are now working alongside nurses, teachers, police officers and prison officers.
Increasing mutual respect between the professions will hopefully be reflected in more equitable salaries.
