Doncaster mayor rejects call to quit over children’s service failings

Doncaster Council’s elected mayor Martin Winter has rejected calls for his resignation today.

At a full council meeting, a majority of 46 councillors voted for a motion which urged Winter to “accept full responsibility regarding the failure of the children and young people’s services that has occured within his period of office.”

Just six councillors voted against the motion, and seven abstained.

In response, Cllr Garth Oxby, leader of an alliance of independent members, called the result a “pyrrhic victory” and said he would continue to press for answers over failings in children’s services.

Doncaster is just one of 12 authorities led by an elected mayor.
